SABC decision will go a long way in empowering SA artists – ANC

Ruling party supports resolution to extend 90% local offerings to SABC television and other digital platforms

ANC welcomes decision to implement 90% local music across SABC radio

11 May 2016

The African National Congress commends and supports the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for the radical decision to implement a 90% quota for local music to be played on all 18 SABC owned radio stations  from tomorrow, 12 May 2016.

The ground breaking decision by the public broadcaster follows an important and successful consultative process with various representatives of the music  industry throughout the length and breadth of the country.

As the ANC, we believe this much welcomed decision will go a long way in empowering South African artists, and consequently  promoting the African culture locally and to the rest of the world.

We are confident that the people of South Africa will, equally, welcome the changes to local content offering across their radio stations. We support the decision to extend such offerings to SABC television and other digital platforms, which will also be implemented later this year.

The people of South Africa will progressively have a public broadcaster that fully reflects the various styles of local music on offer. Indeed, people's power is advanced through the SABC.
