SADTU report must be published immediately to curb further corruption – Gavin Davis

Teachers should be appointed based on their ability to teach, not their willingness to bribe, says DA

SADTU Jobs-for-Cash Report Imminent

3 December 2015

The DA has received notice from Minister Angie Motshekga that the long-awaited ‘jobs-for-cash’ forensic investigation will be finalised by Monday.

In her letter to the DA Minster Motshekga wrote: “The Task Team will be ready to hand its report to me by no later than 7 December 2015.”

It is about time. The investigation into allegations that SADTU-aligned officials solicited bribes in return for teaching posts was supposed to have been completed six months ago.

In the meantime, the practice of selling teaching posts has continued unabated. The scandal took a more sinister turn over the weekend with the report that two teachers had been gunned down to take them out of the running for vacant principal posts.

Given the urgency of the situation, we hope that Minister Motshekga will not delay the report’s release once she receives it on Monday next week.

Many schools are currently recruiting teachers for the new school year and competition over posts is fierce. It is vital that the forensic report is published immediately to deter corrupt SADTU-aligned officials from soliciting bribes in return for these posts.

We demand quick and decisive action to root out this corruption of our school system. Our children deserve teachers appointed based on their ability to teach, not their willingness to bribe corrupt officials.
