SANDF admits to possibility it was protecting business assets in CAR - SANDU

Union says Brigadier General Mabanga's admission on Radio 702 flies in face of earlier denials

MEDIA STATEMENT BY SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE UNION IN REACTION TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN DEFENCE FORCE ADMITTING THE POSSIBILITY OF SOUTH AFRICAN TROOPS PROTECTING BUSINESS INTERESTS IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

1 APRIL 2013

South African National Defence Union has taken note of remarks by Brigadier General Mabanga, spokesperson for the SANDF this morning on talk radio 702, in effect admitting the possibility of South African Troops protecting business assets in the Central African Republic. This admission pries in the face of previous denials of two ministers.

In fact Brigadier General Mabanga's admission even contains the serious allegations that the protection of such business interests was initiated by an illegal order, by someone in the military chain of command.

SANDU supports the undertaking by Brigadier General Mabanga to have this matter investigated, in order to establish the origin of the illegal order to protect South African interest through the SANDF.

It becomes clear that a full scale of inquiry has become essential in establishing the full truth behind the entire Central African Republic fiasco. It is clear that either the Minister Of Defence And Military Veterans, in denying South African business interests was misleading the public, or she herself has been mislead.
