Cops complicit in Delft vigilante murder
19 November 2014
I have written to the Executive Director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Robert McBride seeking an urgent investigation into the brutal murder of a man who was beaten by vigilantes while a number South African Police Service (SAPS) members stood idly by.
Reports surfaced this morning in the Delft area, of the Western Cape. The man was attacked by an angry crowd attempting mob justice. The incident was caught on camera and clearly indicates that SAPS members stood by and watched as the man was beaten to death.
It is shocking that the police stood by as the crowd whipped, kicked and even ripped the man's finger nails off with pliers. This was a despicable act by both the police and the mob that merits serious investigation by the IPID.
The police's inaction makes them complicit in this crime. The IPID must investigate and the responsible SAPS members must be brought to book.
