Senzo Mchunu's resignation received, considered and accepted - ANC KZN

PWC says party will be nominating Willies Mchunu as the next Premier of the province

Resignation of the Premier

The ANC KwaZulu-Natal has received, considered and accepted the resignation of comrade Edward Senzo Mchunu from the position of the Premier of our province.

This decision by comrade Mchunu followed a detailed assessment of the state of governance in the province and extensive consultation with the National Executive Committee.

Subsequently, the ANC Provincial Officials met with comrade Senzo Mchunu on Friday, 20th May 2016, to convey the decision of the movement which he accepted with a great sense of humility exemplified of his conduct in the movement for many years. The ANC Provincial Executive Committee pays tribute to comrade Senzo for the work he has done for our people, acting on behalf of his organization, the ANC.

The PEC has decided that comrade Senzo Mchunu will be deployed to the National Assemble. We also wish well in what will his new responsibilities subsequent to his resignation from the position of the Premier. The ANC calls on the people of KwaZulu-Natal to accept and respect the decision of comrade Senzo Mchunu.

ANC Candidate for the Premier

The African National Congress, following the processes prescribed by law, will nominate its Provincial Deputy Chairperson comrade Willies Mchunu to be elected as the next Premier of the province. We have chosen comrade Willies Mchunu because of his seniority, experience and skills demonstrated over many years of service in government and our movement in general.

The nomination of comrade Willies Mchunu is publicly pronounced following a consultation with the Tripartite Alliance made up of the SACP, COSATU and SANCO, which also endorsed the proposal made by the leader of the alliance, the African National Congress.

We call on all our structures, members and supporters to welcome and accept the position of the movement in response to the current developments. The ANC remains a beacon of hope and a trusted leader of our people that always acts in their best interests. Once again, our sincere thanks and best wishes to comrade Willies Mchunu for his nomination for the position of Premier.

The imperative of our task to build a national democratic society necessitates that the movement as a whole must move in unison as we advance towards the upcoming Local Government Elections. We should neither spare any efforts nor any energy in working for a decisive victory of the African National Congress.
