Statement on the resignation of the Speaker of the Western Cape Parliament

The Federal Executive of the Democratic Alliance considered a request by the Western Cape Provincial Executive that, owing to the health of the Speaker of the Western Cape Parliament, Sheik Esau, he be transferred to the National Assembly. The Federal Executive acceded to this request and Sheik Esau will resign as Speaker and take up his position as a member of the National Assembly with effect from 30 January 2012.

The Party would like to place on record its appreciation for the service that Sheik Esau performed while Speaker and wishes him success in his new position.

As part of this process, Mr Piet Pretorius and Mr Archie Figlan will become members of the Western Cape Parliament and Mr Bill Eloff a member of the National Assembly.
