SIU's Nkandla report delay of serious concern - James Selfe

DA MP says the reasons presented by the unit for this are highly suspicious

DA will submit PAIA application to gain access to SIU Nkandla Report

27 June 2014

Reports that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has delayed the release of their final report on the R246 million expenditure on President Jacob Zuma's  private home in Nkandla are deeply concerning.

It is equally suspicious that the SIU has now noted "certain circumstances which are outside of its control" as the reason for this delay, while not clarifying media reports that the SIU is looking for a "diplomatic" way of presenting the report to the public.

South Africans deserve access to the full report, so that they can interrogate its findings, and its accuracy. Especially since the provisional report was a complete whitewash.

Anything less will point to a continuation of the cover-up of this scandal, in a bid to protect President Zuma at all costs.

The DA will not let this happen. I will urgently write to the Head of the SIU, Mr Vasantrai Soni, and request that he furnish me with all the reasons for the delay, including "the special circumstances" that was referred to in an SIU statement, as well as clarify whether or not the full report will be made public.

Should I not get an answer confirming the release of the full report, and a reasonable explanation for its delay, the DA will submit an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, to gain full access to the report.

The DA will not rest until all those responsible for this wrong doing, including President Zuma, are held to account for this gross abuse of public money.

Statement issued by James Selfe MP, Chairperson of the DA's Federal Executive, June 27 2014
