Sizwe Mchunu's 'blue light' statement insensitive - ANC KZN

Sihle Zikalala says DA KZN leader tried to use tragic accident for a publicity stunt

DA MISLEADING AND INSENSITIVE TO BEREAVED FAMILIES.

The Democratic Alliance's (DA) statement on the head-on car collision that claimed the lives of seasoned journalist Tim Ncube and King Goodwill Zwelithini's VIP Protection unit officer on Monday was insensitive and misleading.

At a time when all political parties and the general public were sending condolences to those who experienced grief as a result of the accident, the DA used the accident as its publicity stunt. This demonstrates how detached the DA is from the feelings of the people on the ground.

It is absurd for the DA to claim the accident was caused by blue lights. KwaZulu-Natal transport MEC Willies Mchunu said preliminary reports of the accident in question show that the accident happened when one of the drivers overtook in the area where he was not supposed to overtake.

Accidents of this nature claim many lives on daily basis in South Africa. That is why in its Arrive Alive campaigns, the African National Congress (ANC) led-provincial government always stresses the importance of adhering to the rules of the road to prevent accidents. No driver is allowed to drive in a manner that puts other motorists in danger.

So it is cheap politics for the DA to claim that the accident happened because one of the cars involved in the Monday accident used blue lights. If the DA is serious about promoting safety on our roads, it should join the ANC and the provincial government in discouraging dangerous driving which includes reckless overtaking done by many of our motorists.

It is amazing how the DA has decided to interweave issues to suit its own political agendas.  The DA claims that the issue of the abuse of the use of blue lights is not receiving the attention it deserves in our province. It is public knowledge that this issue is being processed at a provincial government level.

The ANC-led provincial government recently began the process of how to eliminate the abuse of blue lights. Cde Mchunu expects everyone (Including the DA) to make a constructive contribution.

The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal again sends its condolences to the families of the two people who died  during the accident and those whom sustained injuries.
