Soweto: Learners should not be looting - Gauteng DoE

MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the attacks on foreign nationals are barbaric and criminal

GDE Condemns the Looting of Shops by learners

23 January 2015

The Gauteng Department of Education condemns the participation of learners in the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals in Soweto yesterday.

The looting and attacks follows the killing of a Soweto teenager by a foreign shop owner on Monday.

We appeal to leaners to refrain from these illegal activities and respect their school uniform. We are working with the districts and principals to ensure that all learners are in class during the contact time and continue with learning.

"There is no excuse for our learners to be seen roaming around the streets during and after contact hours in school uniform," said MEC Lesufi.

"I have already had discussions with Cosas to assist us in mobilising learners against these acts of thuggery and political backwardness. We view these as acts that are barbaric and criminal directed at foreign nationals residing in our country," said MEC Lesufi.
