SSA must explain 'damaging leak' - David Maynier

DA MP calls for JSCI to be briefed on leak to Al Jazeera of briefings and internal analyses generated by the agency between 2006 and 2014 (Feb 23)

JSCI must be briefed on the leak of classified documents from the State Security Agency

23 February 2015

The Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo, must brief the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence as a matter of urgency on the leak of classified documents from the State Security Agency (SSA) .

The State Security Agency is set to experience the "largest and possibly most damaging leak" ever according to Al Jazeera, who is in possession of classified documents that reportedly include briefings and internal analyses generated by the agency between 2006 and 2014 (see here).

I will, therefore, be writing to the Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, Connie September, requesting that she schedule an urgent briefing on what appears to be a massive leak of classified documents from the State Security Agency.

UPDATE:

Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence must be briefed on the "spy cable" expose by Al Jazeera

24 February 2015

I have written to the Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, Connie September, requesting an urgent briefing on the "spy cable" expose, involving the State Security Agency (SSA).

Al Jazeera's investigative unit is in possession of a number of classified documents from intelligence services around the world, including the State Security Agency.

All the documents have been redacted to protect innocent people from harm.

The classified documents put into the public domain by Al Jazeera's investigative unit includes for example:

A report, entitled "Operational Target Analysis of Iran", which is classified "secret" and dated January 2010; and

A report, entitled "Iranian Intelligence Activities in Africa",  which is classified "secret", and dated October 2012.

These documents provide the first insights we have into the "inner workings" of the State Security Agency.

We have never come this close to seeing inside the bottom-drawers of the State Security Agency.

It's early days but Al Jazeera's "spy cable" expose is likely to be the cause of considerable embarrassment to the State Security Agency.

It's imperative that the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence is briefed on:

The likely scope, origins and impact of the "spy cable" expose;  and

Most importantly whether the "spy cable" expose is likely to reveal any wrong doing on the part of the State Security Agency.

I have therefore requested the Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, Connie September, to:

To schedule an urgent briefing by the Minister of State Security, David Mahlobo, on the "spy cable" expose; and

To prepare a special report on the spy cable expose, in terms of Section 6 (2) the Intelligence Services Oversight Act (No. 40 of 1994), to be tabled in Parliament.
