Solidarity v EFF: Court prohibits Malema and co to incite the public
21 April 2015
The Solidarity Movement today obtained an urgent interdict prohibiting the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and its leadership from further inciting the public to vandalise or remove any statues in the country.
The court order specifically prohibits EFF leader, Julius Malema, the party’s national spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, and the party’s deputy chair in Tshwane, Moafrika Mabongwana, to further incite any of the party’s members or supporters to deface, vandalise or remove any national monument or statue in South Africa. This specifically includes monuments and statues that represent the Afrikaner history and culture.
According to Solidarity Deputy Head Johan Kruger, the court’s ruling is a huge victory for the Afrikaans cultural community, and it sends a clear message out against the destruction of Afrikaner history and heritage. “The defacing and vandalising of statues that represent a certain part of the South African history is a highly emotional issue. This type of action is divisive and causes mounting tension between cultural communities and racial groups,” Kruger says.
Kruger says the Solidarity Movement will keep a close eye on the EFF leadership and, should they not comply with the court order, the movement will bring an application for contempt of court against the party.
