"Stinky muthi terror!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, March 17 2014

Daily Sun (March 17 2014) - IT WAS bad enough when Precious found a parcel of muthi outside her house. But then her neighbour received an identical parcel. THE NEXT DAY BOTH FAMILIES GOT MUTHI PARCELS AGAIN! They are terrified of what the parcels of muthi will bring.

First Daily Sun heard about the dirty, smelly parcel at the home of Precious Mokhatshwa (35), and then the same thing happened at the house of

Veronica Mashele (44).

The two families live eight houses apart in Block PP, Soshanguve, north of Tshwane. Both houses have high walls and it seems the parcels were thrown over the walls.

Precious said she had already suffered four miscarriages while Veronica said she has had a stroke. The parcels, wrapped in red cloth and smeared with black muthi, stink badly. They include needles and two sticks and are wrapped like a bag of black ashes and muthi.

The second parcels contained two small sticks, a needle and plastic containing muthi and also wrapped with a red cloth.

Precious said she was taking her child to school when she found the first parcel on her doorstep on Thursday.

"I took it to a sangoma who said I should not have picked it up with my bare hands," she said.

"Later that night I got terrible pains over my entire body."

The next day the other parcel arrived with the red cloth and the same terrible smell.

Precious said in recent years she has had four miscarriages and she is always fighting with her husband.

"I don't have peace in my home. I suspect all of this is the work of the devil."

Veronica said she found the parcel on Thursday and took it to the dump but the next day there was another parcel on her doorstep.

"I also took it to the dump but then I heard the same thing had happened to my neighbour."

Veronica said she is not enjoying life either.

"I suffered a stroke last month and now I receive strange parcels at my house," she said.

"This is the work of people who want to hurt me. I am poor. Why are they after me?" she asked.

Sangoma Maria Chauke from Mabopane said they should not take these parcels lightly.

"Evil people use needles and pins to cause illness and a red cloth is an indication of danger," she said.
