Note to Editors: Please find the attached soundbite in English and Afrikaans by Carin Visser, MP, the DA Constituency Head in Naledi Local Municipality.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Naledi applauds efforts led by the Vryburg Stock Theft Unit and the Security Network of North West (NW) in recovering 85 head of cattle and apprehending a suspect linked to the theft.

A total of 98 calves were stolen on 14 March 2021 at Sweet Home Farm in Vryburg, only 85 have been recovered after being sold in three different feedlots in Kuruman in the Northern Cape.

The unit is continuing in its efforts to locate and recover the remaining cattle. The 82 calves recovered were identified by tattoo and of these, 12 of them were sold at Karenbeef in Heidelberg.

The DA commends the work of the stock theft unit and the Agricultural Security Network who worked tirelessly to successfully retrieve the stolen cattle.

The arrest and possible prosecution of this individual will go a long way in discouraging further stock theft which leaves farmers suffering massive losses in income. Stock theft not only threatens the livelihoods of farmers and farmworkers but also their safety, security and lives. This scourge must be brought to an end.

The DA will monitor the case closely to ensure that the processes and procedures of the criminal procedures act is followed.
