Strong DA growth in by-elections - Mmusi Maimane

National spokesperson says his party retained 4 wards, made inroads into ANC support elsewhere

Strong DA growth in by-elections

The DA achieved significant growth in by-elections across the country yesterday. The trend everywhere is clear:  In every contested ward, the DA's support levels grew, and in almost all cases the ANC's support dropped.

We retained 4 DA wards with increased majorities and made inroads into ANC support in every other ward we contested.

The most significant result was in ward 70 in eThekwini, where we massively increased our support to win this former Minority Front (MF) ward for the first time. Our support levels grew from 33% in 2011, to 59% in yesterday's by-election.

Another important result was in Mnquma ward 2 in the rural Eastern Cape. We more than doubled our support in this ward from 8% in 2011, to 21% yesterday.

Here are the full results per ward contested by the DA:

Ward 70 eThekwini:

DA 2011:  33%

DA 2013:  59%

Ward 2 Mnquma:

DA 2011:  8%

DA 2013:  21%

Ward 9 Kouga:

DA 2011:  33%

DA 2013:  44%

Ward 5 Kouga:

DA 2011:  55%

DA 2013:  58%

Ward 22 Emalahleni:

DA 2011:  55%

DA 2013:  66%

Ward 6 Ditsobola:

DA 2011:  73%

DA 2013:  76%

Ward 8 Modimolle:

DA 2011:  63%

DA 2013:  65%

Ward 4 Gamagara:

DA 2011:  22%

DA 2013:  results delayed

The numbers tell a clear story. The DA is growing in communities across all of South Africa. More and more people are choosing to vote DA for the first time.

These results bode very well for the outcome of next year's elections.
