"The case of the dumbest hijacker!" - Daily Sun

The front page and lead story of SA's largest daily newspaper, December 5 2013

Daily Sun (December 5 2013) - THIS WAS the end of the road for Mzansi's dumbest hijacker. The thug seized a VW Golf 6 and stabbed its owner before speeding away, zig-zagging crazily. BUT 500m AWAY, HE ENDED UP JUMPING A ROBOT AND CRASHING INTO A TREE!

Bystanders quickly gave him a beating and pinned him to the tarmac before cops arrived. It happened in Braamfontein, central Joburg, yesterday in the slow-moving Bertha Street traffic.

The thug - believed to be aged 41 and from Nancefield Hostel in Soweto - pounced on a motorist, pulled him out of the car and stabbed him. But he raced away so erratically that witnesses said they thought he couldn't drive.

"Even a learner doesn't drive like that," said one woman. He was taking chances and that's why he failed."

Another witness said: "He was driving like a mad person, not thinking of the safety of other people or motorists."

The frantic hijacker turned the car into Jorissen Street, skipped through a red light, zig-zagged through a pack of cars, and bumped a 20-year-old woman student before crashing the car into a tree.

Said the witness: "We grabbed the guy with the help of other people and gave him a thrashing. Then we handed him to the cops."

Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder and hijacking.

He was taken to a hospital with serious head injuries sustained in the accident.

Metro cop Inspector Edna Mamonyane said it hadn't been determined whether the suspect had a driver's licence.
