The fire pool question that parliament won't accept - COPE

Deidre Carter says police minister must explain where else in the world such a security feature has been provided at the private residence of a president

COPE ASKS WHY QUESTIONS OFFICE REJECTED QUESTION 2581

10 June 2015

COPE is puzzled why the questions office will not publish the following question:

CONGRESS OF THE PEOPLE
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
8 June 2015
QUESTION FOR WRITTEN REPLY
Ms D Carter (Cope) to ask the Minister of Police:

2581

Whether his Department had carried out any investigation or requested any information from any of the foreign embassies in South Africa on how many departments of police anywhere in the world had supported the provision at State expense for a fire pool in the guise of a massive and highly decorated swimming pool costing the equivalent Of R3 million rand, at the private residence of any head of State as a very essential Security requirement in order to support the Minister's contention that such an arrangement was nothing out of the ordinary at all, all circumstances considered; if so:

(a) what are the details of that investigation or enquiry and

(b) which head of State anywhere in the world had such a fire pool as president Zuma at his Nkandla homestead as a security feature fully paid for by the state; if not, why not?

Whether he will make a statement on the President having temporarily halted the building of the fire pool to establish funding arrangements and gave a go ahead only after the funding matter was sorted out.

DCarter

Surely the Minister of Police will have been able to answer it. South Africa cannot be the only country in the world to build a fire pool as a security feature in the private home of a president. Surely the Minister benchmarks what we do with international best practice.
