MEDIA STATEMENT FOLLOWING THIS MORNING'S BURGLARY AT THE HOUSE OF CONSTITUTIONAL COURT JUSTICE SISI KHAMPEPE

The Chief Justice and the Judiciary are deeply hurt by today's house breaking and robbery incident at Justice Khampepe's house. This matter is currently the subject of an investigation by the Police. The Office of the Chief Justice has been briefed by the South African Police Service on measures that have been taken to strengthen the security around Justice Khampepe's house.

This incident takes place in the wake of an application by the Chief Justice for tighter security measures, for now, around the Justices of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, and the Judges President.  What is envisaged is that these judges should have both static and in transit security.

The application has already been submitted to Minister Jeff Radebe for consideration by Cabinet.

In addition to the alarm systems installed by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the South African Police Service has recently commenced with patrols around the residences of judges following on an agreement reached by the Chief Justice, Minister Radebe and the Acting National Commissioner of Police.
