Daily Sun (September 18 2013) - IT BEGAN in 2006 with banging on the door in the dead of night . . . It got so loud that Mary Makhathini was too scared to answer! BUT EVER SINCE THEN HER LIFE HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE.

She says the ghostly form of a man kept appearing in her mud rondavel in rural KwaNxamalala, near Pietermaritzburg, KZN. "He would choke me and beat me until I fell back on the bed," Mary told Daily Sun. Then this June the ghost of a woman appeared. She also grabbed me and beat me."

In desperation Mary contacted the previous owners of the house. "They told me they were also terrorised by the ghosts!

"They said that was the reason they decided to sell the house."

Street vendor Mary (46) paid R4 000 for the rondavel in 2004. But her excitement at having a place of her own to live in with her two children was shortlived.

"Two months after I moved into the house in 2006 I heard the knocking at the door.

"It happened at about 3am and kept getting louder if I ignored it," said Mary. "But when I asked who was there, there was no answer. That was when the ghost appeared and started beating and choking me."

Mary told Daily Sun she consulted several sangomas, who told her a previous owner of the house had died from poisoning. They said the ghost was the man who kept coming back to avenge his death.

"When I asked my neighbours how the previous owner had died, they said it was from natural causes, although they heard rumours that he was poisoned."

It was then that Mary contacted the people she bought the house from - and discovered they too had been terrorised.

"I told them to come and cleanse the house because we were having sleepless nights now," said Mary. "I am thinking of selling the house if I don't get anyone to chase these ghosts away from me."

Mary said when she called a prophet the ghostly man vanished for a while - but came back in 2010 and began choking her again. Now she has to battle with the woman ghost too!

"I hear voices talking inside my room and I hear my young son Nkosikhona (6) crying. It is like someone is shocking me with electricity. I see the ghostly shape of a woman and she attacks me without saying anything. I desperately need help," cried Mary. "These ghosts keep hurting me and my sons. Even when I'm going to work, it feels as if they are following me."

Her son Mlondi (21) told Daily Sun when he watches television it switches off automatically.

"I feel as if someone is pressing down on me in my sleep. I battle to breathe and when I try to scream, my voice doesn't come out."

Mary's younger sister Zanele said the ghost had also terrorised her when she visited her family.

Thandonjani Hlongwane, KZN chairman of Traditional Healers, said that the woman doesn't need the family of the previous owner to chase away the ghosts.

"She needs a strong inyanga who will speak to the ghosts and send them to their rest," said Hlongwane.

Anyone who can help Mary is asked to call Daily Sun on 031 533 7700.
