Tshwane inches closer to energy independence

31 October 2023

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane congratulates Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink for the successful hosting of the Mayoral Energy Sector Roundtable. This is a pivotal milestone in our commitment to achieving energy independence from Eskom and alleviating the burdens of load-shedding on the residents of Tshwane.

A comprehensive, whole of society approach is essential to rebuilding our country. This multi-sector Energy Sector engagement, involving industry experts, energy regulators, Gauteng -, and Tshwane authorities harnesses the extensive expertise of industry leaders to address the crippling effects of load shedding on our City's economy.

In alignment with the DA Energy policy, Tshwane's approach focuses on fostering public-private partnerships. The leasing of Rooiwal and Pretoria West Power Stations for private power production to be fed into the Tshwane grid is the most important step in this journey. This strategic initiative revolves around diversifying our energy sources, unlocking financial value from our crucial assets, and promoting sustainable energy solutions. It represents a significant stride toward reducing our dependence on Eskom, enhancing energy diversity, optimising rental venues, reducing operational costs, and safeguarding our future asset portfolio.

Additionally, by leasing these assets, Tshwane is projected to save hundreds of millions of rands that would otherwise be earmarked for maintenance and staff expenses at the Rooiwal power station. This endeavour not only secures a more energy-independent future for Tshwane but also plays a pivotal role in our financial recovery plan, with energy independence as the cornerstone.

The DA is committed to ensuring that ratepayers receive value for their rates and taxes. This is an essential step forward in ensuring that the lights stay on, businesses remain open, the economy of Tshwane flourishes, and job opportunities are created
