TSHWAING MUNICIPALITY USES POOL CHLORINE FOR WATER PURIFICATION
AfriForum has given the Municipality of Tswaing [Delareyville] to closing time today to give an undertaking that swimming pool chlorine will no longer be used in the sewerage works.
This step follows after it had come to AfriForum's attention that the Municipality is now, in a desperate effort to reduce sewerage pollution at Sannieshof, buying pool chlorine on a large scale for use in the sewerage works.
Even though e-coli pollution must be prevented by means of chlorine, only certain chlorine products have been approved by the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs for use in drinking water. Pool chlorine contains additives which are not fit for use in drinking water.
Willie Spies, AfriForum's legal representative, has demanded by letter of the Municipality to give an undertaking before closing time today that the use of pool chlorine will be stopped immediately and that only products fit for use in drinking water will henceforth be used.
If such an undertaking is not given, the High Court will be approached for appropriate relief on an urgent basis. The unabridged letter, as sent to the Municipality, is attached.
