UJ deeply saddened by death of mother - Ihron Rensburg

University announces that no more late applications will be considered

Statement by Prof Ihron Rensburg, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg community is deeply saddened by the events at our Bunting Road Campus during the late application process on January 10 which led to the untimely death of a mother who had accompanied her son to apply for entrance.

It's a sad day in history that a mother, who had sacrificed so much for the education of her son, should lose her life trying to assist her son to get an excellent tertiary education at UJ.

Our condolences to her family and friends and our thoughts go to the other applicants who were injured during the course of the morning's events.

Announcement on late applications:

The University of Johannesburg has received approximately 7000 late applications since Monday, 9 January. Regrettably we hereby announce that no further new applications will be considered for 2012. The process for the consideration of new application is hereby closed. Professor Marie Muller, Registrar, 10 January.
