Voters of Ward 18 UMzimkhulu reject DA - ANC

Party says South Africans not fooled by opposition's untruthful and revisionist narrative

ANC welcomes by-election results in uMzimkhulu

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the outcome of the by-elections held yesterday in UMzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal. The ANC's overwhelming and resounding victory in Ward 18 demonstrates that our people continue to believe in the ANC. The electorate of Ward 18 have rejected the DA's assertion that they could present a credible and convincing alternative to the African National Congress, an organization of the people.

South Africans are not fooled by attempts by the DA and its ilk to recreate themselves as being champions of the genuine aspirations of the people. Our collective struggle is over hundred years old and will not be erased by those who stand for an untruthful and revisionist narrative.

This rejection of the DA and its cause in Umzimkhulu, is a clear sign of things to come in the general elections to be held in 2014. Our people are not gullible and they understand that the struggle for a better life can only be carried out by the movement that fought for their freedom in the first instance.

We welcome back Ward 18 as it once again rejoins the rest of the wards in the Harry Gwala region under the leadership of the ANC. The African National Congress thanks all community members who came out to cast their vote and welcome unreservedly the confidence and trust they have placed in the ANC to deliver a better life for all.

Statement issued by Jackson Mthembu, ANC national spokesperson, May 16 2013
