W Cape contributes R9 billion to opportunity for the youth – Yusuf Cassim

DA says ANC only worried about itself while youth are being let down and forgotten

DA-run Western Cape contributes R9 billion to opportunity for the youth

15 June 2016

Today, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 Soweto Uprising, the DA has come to Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha’s office to demand jobs for the youth of Limpopo.

The heroes of 1976 fought against racism and oppression. They fought not only for their own rights, but the rights of their children and generations to come. Their bravery and courage will never be forgotten.

I often ask myself: how can my generation - those who have grown up in a democracy -  contribute to this legacy? Will those who died fighting for justice be proud of where the youth in South Africa find themselves today?

The truth is that South Africa made progress after 1994, but this has stalled. Young South Africans are locked outside of the economy – unable to access higher education opportunities; unable to get a job; and unable to live a life of dignity.

There are more than 8.9 million unemployed South Africans in today. It is estimated that at least two thirds of all unemployed people are between the ages of 15 and 34.

It is getting harder and harder to get by if you are young in our country.

Democrats, the youth are being let down. They are being forgotten. Their future and what is best for them isn’t being taken seriously.

This is because the ANC is only worried about self—enrichment. Instead of jobs for the youth, you get jobs for those connected to Zuma and his friends. Instead of more public funds for higher education, you get more money for luxury jets and Nkandla upgrades.

And the ANCYL? Where are they these days? Nowhere. They exist only to defend Jacob Zuma. They do nothing for young people in South Africa. If Nkandla is in the news, they will come out and speak for Zuma.

But where are they when unemployment sky-rockets to 8.9 million people? Where are they when poor students are forced to drop out of university because of a lack of funds? Where are they when EPWP job opportunities are given to the ANC councillor’s friends?

They’re nowhere.

Democrats, the DA would make the youth a priority. Where we govern, we are proving this. Earlier today it was revealed that the DA-run Western Cape Government plans to spend more than R9 billion on the youth in the 2016/2017 financial year. These programmes are designed to provide opportunities for young people in the province, and help them realise their skills and talents.

We want to bring about this change to more and more places across South Africa. Because if the youth succeeds, South Africa succeeds.

My message to you today is to vote for change that creates jobs on 3 August 2016. That is the best way to honour the legacy of 1976. That is the best way to bring real freedom to the millions of young people who live in our beautiful country.
