On Tuesday, Premier Alan Winde revealed that the Western Cape has thus far generated 1008MW of power that has gone into Eskom and municipal grids.

This was revealed during the debate on the Western Cape Department of the Premier budget vote.

Through the Western Cape Municipal Energy Resilience Initiative, 558MW of power was generated in 2020 which has culminated into 1008MW in 2023. This generation is the result of utility scale, low carbon generation such as wind and solar energy.

In my capacity as Chairperson of the Western Cape Ad Hoc Committee on Energy, I will soon invite the Departments of Premier and Economic Development & Tourism, to brief the Provincial Parliament on this massive achievement of the MER Initiative.

The DA welcomes the announcement by Premier Winde as it highlights that the Western Cape is well on its way to becoming the first loadshedding free province.
