We reject BMW's efforts at blackmail - NUMSA

Union says the strike in motor components sector has been settled (with new wage tables)

The 4 week old Motor Industry strike

The Numsa National Executive Committee (NEC) convened a special meeting on Thursday 3rd October 2013 to receive updated reports on the status of wage negotiations with the RMI and component manufacturers.

The NEC resolved that;

1. The employer's offer of 10%, 9%, 9% for 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the component manufacturing sector is to be accepted.

2. The employer's offer of 9%, 8%, 8% for 2013, 2014 and 2015 in all other sectors must be accepted.

3. The following forms part of the industry settlement;

RMI / NUMSA SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT: SEPTEMBER 2013

Stubborn and arrogant motor employers

This motor industry strike took 4 weeks simply because employers have been arrogantly and stubbornly sticking to the "peace clause". In this respect employers have threatened centralized bargaining in that individual employers have given unilateral increases (and higher plant level increases) thereby seeking to undo centralized bargaining and bribing workers not to participate in the national protected industry strike. We shall after the strike assesses and examine the motor industry collective bargaining regime and take the fight back to employers.

BMW's blackmail rejected by Numsa

Numsa refuse to be blackmailed by BMW, NAAMSA or any other neo-liberal analyst/economists for our right to strike. CEO's of car manufacturers showed no leadership whatsoever during the Auto and Motor industry strikes. The likes of BMW must remember that it is taxpayer's money that subsidizes the profit they so generously make in South Africa (see here).

In China and Zimbabwe they would never be allowed to hold the country to ransom. Workers who are the producers of wealth cannot be silenced into submission. Numsa shall not stand for it. We shall seek a formal meeting the leadership of BMW to discuss their threats to the South African economy.

Numsa engagement with government:

During the national motor industry strike, the Numsa national leadership engaged with government on the issue of labour broking and equal pay for equal work and we were assured that the legislation would have been passed before year end.

Tyre manufacturers and Eskom wage disputes:

As we settle the national motor industry strike we are heading towards a Tyre manufacturing industry wage deadlock and a wage deadlock in Eskom. It is Numsa's appeal that management of these sectors must look reasonable at the demands of Numsa members if we are to avoid industrial action.

E-tolls, youth wage subsidy and the International Monetary Fund:

Numsa is extremely dissatisfied with the RSA President's signing into law e-tolling which is nothing but privatization of public roads. The National Treasury's welcoming of the IMF's call for a much more flexible labour market regime vindicates Numsa's argument that our ANC government is pursuing neo-liberal and anti-working class policies. The IMF and governments NDP shall never deliver workers and the working class out of poverty, inequality and unemployment. If we allow this situation to continue we shall simply postpone the resolution of the triple crises to 2030.
