We won't participate in Marikana commemoration - ANC NWest

Party says event being organised by illegitimate team called "Marikana support group", not by govt

ANC WILL NOT PARTICIPATE AT MARIKANA COMMEMORATION

The African National Congress in North West will not be participating at the Marikana Commemoration taking place tomorrow, 16th August 2013.  The commemoration is organised by an illegitimate team called "Marikana support group" - a group which the ANC does not recognise.

The ANC will only participate in a commemoration organised by government, as agreed with Families, Lonmin Platinum Mine and Labour Unions.

The ANC finds it immoral and totally unacceptable that such a traumatic incident could be turning into a political play ground by some political parties who seeks to enhance their political ambitions and interests. We are equally astonished by the permission granted by Lonmin Platinum Mine to this illegitimate structure.

We further reiterate our condemnation and disdain of the killing of Mcedi Mabulu, who was found lying dead in the middle of the street in Marikana on Saturday, 10th August 2013. Equally on Monday, 12 August 2013, Nobongile Madolo, a 44 year old shopsteward from the National Union of Mine workers, was gunned down in front of her home.

The ANC leadership in the North West will continue with its visit to the families of the victims of these crimes.

The leadership collective, led by the ANC Provincial Chairperson extends its condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the deceased.

Statement issued by Kenny Morolong, ANC Provincial Spokesperson, August 15 2013
