Why DA eThekwini voted against removal of Deputy Mayor

DA eThekwini votes against removal of Deputy Mayor to block possible ANC-EFF Coalition

13 December 2022

The DA in eThekwini has distanced itself from supporting the motion against the removal of eThekwini Deputy Mayor, Councillor Philani Mavundla.

The resolution to remove the ABC's Leader and Deputy Mayor was carried out by the ANC and strongly supported by the EFF and other small parties, at the final council meeting of 2022.

Mavundla’s removal was confirmed with 125 votes against him while 59 voted in his favour.

It is rumoured that an ANC-EFF coalition is now beginning to form, of which the DA will have nothing to do with nor support.

It is noteworthy that the DA and other like-minded opposition parties who were willing to overthrow the corrupt ANC in eThekwini were rejected by the ABC and other minor parties.

Allowing the cancerous ANC to remain in power.

Nevertheless, the DA voted against firing Mavundla. The DA upholds the law and the due process rather than seeking retribution or acting out of malice.

The DA voted against the motion because of the legal ambiguities surrounding the issue and because it did not want to become involved in the political disputes between the ANC and its allies.

Our efforts to overthrow the ANC and improve our municipality may be thwarted as the EFF and ANC coalition seems to be taking shape.

However, as an organization we stand with and for the people of eThekwini, we refuse to be used as pawns by the ANC for its own personal gain and will protect residents at all costs.
