Why has Tom Moyane suddently 'retired'? - James Selfe

DA MP to submit parliamentary questions over the sudden departure of the DCS DG

Minister must explain sudden ‘retirement' of Tom Moyane

The Minister of Correctional Services, Sbu Ndebele, must explain the sudden departure of National Commissioner Tom Moyane. National Commissioner Moyane has ‘retired' and has been replaced by Chief Operating Officer, Nontsikelelo Jolingana.

I will be submitting parliamentary questions to determine on what grounds Commissioner Moyane's contract was suddenly terminated and when he was informed of this termination.

It is a great pity to lose Mr Moyane from the Department as he has provided some stability after having four national commissioners since 2007. During this period, the Department also went for lengths of time with an acting commissioner and now we are back to that situation.

Mr Moyane has also helped in ensuring that the Department's finances are on their way to being in order. He got rid of consultants and did much to ensure that contracts were properly awarded and that the DCS got value for money.

For this reason, the DA cannot fathom why his contract was suddenly terminated and he was replaced by Jolingana. This is a great disappointment.

Mr Moyane in fact only turned 60 in January and still had two years left of his contract. If his age was of such great concern to the Minister then he should have ‘retired' him in January. The timing is rather suspect.

The Minister must explain the reasoning behind this decision and the fact that Mr Moyane appeared not to have known of his ‘retirement'.
