Why we are dissolving the Mafikeng campus SRC - NWU

Dissolution of NWU Mafikeng Campus SRC

NWU Mafikeng Campus

19 February 2016

Following a meeting between Management and Campus Student Representative Council (CSRC) on Friday, 19 February 2016, Management decided to dissolve the CSRC. This follows after disruptions of academic and administrative activities. They have also not adhered to the constitution of the CSRC (as amended in 2009) which stipulates that the membership shall be terminated if they become incapable of performing their official duties (Clause 3.3.6).

According to the CSRC constitution, Section 1.3 provides detailed information about the activities and functions of the CSRC which amongst others are to:

- manage organized student life with regard to the academic, cultural, sports, residence and other relevant activities (Clause 1.3.1)

- foster / facilitate a healthy relationship between students, academic staff and the University Management (Clause 1.3.3).

Furthermore, the following issues are of great concern:

- The violation of the court interdict;

- Poorly planned “pens down bash” when students were not on campus which led to financial losses;

- Obstruction of the academic registration and orientation programme;

- Active participation and supporting outsiders in vandalising University property, assault of staff and students; and

- Complete lack of student leadership resulting in students not getting services they deserve.
