Why's only one person standing trial for killing of Anene Booysen? - DA

Dianne Kohler Barnard expresses outrage after charges against Jonathan Davids are dropped

Criminal Justice system has failed Anene Booysen

The DA is outraged by the fact that only one of Anene Booysen's alleged attackers will face the courts (see here).

Anene Booysen was gang-raped, mutilated and murdered by allegedly five or six men in February this year. Only two men were charged and now only one will face the justice system.

The state has said today that there was insufficient evidence to secure a conviction in the case against one of the accused.

Whilst we do not question the NPA's decision in the case and we will not pronounce on the guilt or otherwise of individuals, this is a sad indictment on our criminal justice system when only one man will be prosecuted for a gang-rape.

It is clear that some aspect of the criminal justice system has failed Anene Booysen, whether it has been the police or the NPA.

I will be submitting a range of parliamentary questions to both the Ministers of Justice and Police to determine exactly what happened in this case.

The Booysens family deserves answers for who is responsible for their daughter's horrific death.
