Willie Jaftha suspended - Patricia de Lille

DA WCape leader says her party distances itself from Cape Town councillor's submission in mitigation of sentence

DA suspends Cllr. Jaftha after letter to High Court

05 June 2015

The DA unequivocally distances itself from Councillor Willie Jaftha’s written submissions in mitigation of sentence of a convicted gangster in the Geweld Thomas case.

The DA believes that convicted gangsters must receive the harshest sentences possible in law.

Councillor Jaftha has therefore been suspended with immediate effect, in terms of the DA constitution, and has been served with a letter of suspension.

An internal investigation into Councillor Jaftha’s conduct has been initiated.

It is unacceptable, and unconscionable, for a DA pubic representative to write to the High Court seeking to influence the sentencing of convicted criminals.

The DA views this in a very serious light, and will pursue all internal means against Councillor Jaftha.

Statement issued by Patricia de Lille, DA Western Cape Leader, June 5 2015
