Withdrawal of MONC against Mayor Mpho Phalatse welcomed – ActionSA

Failure of motion prevents ANC from getting its hands on the City’s R77bn budget

ActionSA welcomes the withdrawal of COJ MONC against Mayor Mpho Phalatse

24 November 2022

ActionSA is pleased that the Motion of No Confidence (MONC) in the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse failed, ensuring continuation of the Multi-Party Coalition and service delivery to the City’s more than six million residents continue.

The failure of the MONC also prohibits the ANC from getting its hands on the City’s R77 billion budgets, in line with ActionSA’s mission to remove the ANC from power and forging ahead with a pro-poor governance agenda in the City.

ActionSA has long maintained that it would take at least one term, or five years, to turn the situation in the City of Johannesburg around and improve service delivery.

It is for that reason that ActionSA Caucus views the failure of this MONC as an opportunity presented to the Multi-Party Coalition to engage in a process of consolidating a possible majority bloc before the next Council meeting.

It is only through a majority bloc that the Multi-Party coalition will be able to pass Budgets, loans and other critical reports that will ensure uninterrupted service delivery to the residents of our great City.

We are however proud of the successes our ActionSA MMC’s already achieved in the City, including the city-wide deployment of visible policing by metro police officers, the introduction of an informal trading policy and relaunching of the inner-city property release program.

ActionSA looks forward to their continued dedication, particularly to programs they are driving such as the expanded roll-out of the Rea Vaya bus service, the operationalisation of the City of Johannesburg tourism company, and restoring safety and security to the inner city.

ActionSA is committed to pro-poor governance in the City of Johannesburg and will work earnestly to ensure that the most vulnerable residents of the city receive the services they deserve, that law and order is restored, and that jobs and economic opportunities are created.
