Xingwana should emulate Darren Scott's example - AfriForum

Ernst Roets says minister's apology appreciated, but she must nonetheless resign

AfriForum asks Xingwana to follow Darren Scott's example

The civil rights organisation AfriForum sent a letter to the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, today to ask her to resign from her post. This follows the insults Xingwana recently directed at young Afrikaner men and the Calvinistic faith.

Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, explained in the letter to Xingwana that AfriForum appreciated her apology and was grateful for it, but that she had to lend credence and substance to the apology in two ways:

  • She had to submit the apology to ABC in Australia, as this was the forum where she had made her statements in the first place.
  • She had to follow Darren Scott's example by resigning from her post.

Roets said that Xingwana had the opportunity to prove consistency in the ruling party by resigning after issuing the apology, as this was exactly what the ANC had expected of Scott. "The differences are that Scott was not a representative of the public and that his remarks were made to a black colleague at a private function, while Xingwana's remarks were broadcast on international television."

Roets pointed to Xingwana's incompetence as another reason why her resignation had become necessary. "Her department is dysfunctional and she cannot prove that she has made the lives of women and children better in any way. It is an embarrassment to the Government."
