YCL appalled by possible Derby-Lewis parole

League says release of Chris Hani killer would be a travesty of justice

YCLSA ON THE POSSIBLE RELEASE OF CDE. HANI'S KILLER, DERBY LEWIS

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) is appalled by the ongoing attempts by Killer Derby Lewis to be released from prison via parole. Seemingly the call by SACP, YCL and other progressive formations in June for the rejection of his application has fallen on deaf ears to our dismay.

What is more worrying is the possibility that Derby Lewis will walk free and we will forever forfeit an opportunity on finding out the truth of what actually transpired in killing of Cde Chris Hani and who else was involved. The YCLSA has been consistent in calling for the inquest into Cde. Chris Hani's death and that call unfortunately, has seemingly been set aside in favor of barbaric right wing extremists like Derby Lewis.

We will intensify our campaign in calling for the inquest in the death of Cde. Chris Hani and ensuring that this application does not see that light day. We re-iterate that Clive Derby Lewis' release will be a travesty to justice and the end of any possibility of unfolding the truth about the death of Cde Chris Hani.

Statement issued by Gugu Ndima, YCLSA national spokesperson, September 13 2010
