Yengeni: let the justice system work this time
The DA calls on the National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, to ensure that there will be no political meddling following the arrest of ANC National Executive Committee member, Tony Yengeni, on drunk driving charges in Cape Town last night.
Tony Yengeni, the ANC's head of political education, was previously arrested on drunk driving charges in 2007 whilst out on parole following his fraud conviction related to the Arms Deal. The drunk driving case could not go forward because of interference with the blood sample. The Station Commander at Goodwood, who was involved in the case, was convicted for defeating the ends of justice and Yengeni was allowed to walk free.
Had Yengeni been found guilty of his parole violation at that stage, he might have had to return to prison to serve out his four year sentence.
It is clear Yengeni has not learnt from his previous brush with the law and shows the impact of letting criminals get a free pass.
The DA will be watching this case closely and trust that the South African Police Service will not let anything go wrong this time.
