DA horrified by latest Gauteng child murder
The DA is horrified by this weekend's report of yet another child murder in Gauteng. A six-month-old baby was found dead in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg. DA councillor Michael Sun (in the area for voter registrations) was one of the first people to be told that the dead baby was supposedly eaten by rats.
Community members said it was a muti murder after they saw the body.
The DA believes that a whole of society approach is needed to combat violence against children. While all levels of government must be actively involved, parents, family members, teachers and community members must not neglect their responsibility for the safety of our children. There are too many children's bodies being discovered raising too many questions about protection of our children.
With the festive season just around the corner, the DA urges all parents, child minders and guardians to be even more vigilant as many small children will be at home while schools and crèches are closed for the holidays. Homes, neighbourhoods and wherever else children play, eat and sleep must be made safer places.
Our children being neglected, mutilated and slain must come to an end.
