President Jacob Zuma has received the annual recommendations for the remuneration and allowances of the Public Office Bearers, from the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.
In terms of sections 3 to 7 of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1998 (Act No.20 of 1998), read with section 12 of the Magistrates Act, 1993 and section 2 of the Judge's Remuneration and Conditions of Employment Act, 2001, the salaries and allowances of the public office bearers are determined by the President after taking into account, amongst others:
- the recommendations of the Commission;
- the affordability of different levels of remuneration of political office bearers;
- the current principles and level of remuneration in society in general;
- the need for the promotion of equality and uniformity of salaries, allowances and benefits for equal work performed;
- the provision of uniform norms and standards nationally to address disparities; and
- Inflationary increase.
The Commission has recommended 5 % annual adjustment to the salaries of all public office bearers. The President has accepted the recommendations of the Commission in this regard. As required by the relevant provisions of the Acts of Parliament mentioned above, the President will determine the salaries and allowances of all public office bearers accordingly.
The Commission also made recommendations on tools of trade of certain public office bearers. Costing and affordability assessment will be done by the Minister of Finance regarding the tools of trade and the matter will then be brought to Cabinet.
The President would like to take this opportunity to thank the Commission for its work.
