ANC statement on the renaming of William Nicol drive to Winnie Mandela drive

In 2018 the African National Congress (ANC) put forth a motion in the Johannesburg City Council to rename William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive in honor of one of South Africa's iconic anti-apartheid activists and leaders.

This proposal reflected a broader effort to encourage social cohesion as a critical fabric of our society through celebration of South Africa's heritage and history. It sought to realise this by acknowledging the significant contributions of one of our leaders in the struggle for freedom and equality which also laid a bedrock for the South Africa of today and future.

Mama Winnie Mandela, born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela, was a towering and prominent South African anti-apartheid activist and political figure. She was a key leader in the ANC who played a vital role in the struggle against apartheid. Mama Winnie was known for her fearless determination and unwavering commitment in the fight for equality and prosperity for all in South Africa. Faced with persecution, imprisonment, and hardship during her activism, she remained resolute in her determination to contribute in the building of a just society. Her life and legacy continue to inspire many as a symbol of resistance and resilience in the greater selfless offering for the many.

The ANC's position to rename key streets and buildings in South Africa to honour icons who played pivotal roles in shaping the country's history reflects a broader effort to unite society behind tried and tested icons who tirelessly contributed to the nation's struggle for freedom and democracy. By renaming streets and buildings after these icons, the ANC aims to ensure that their legacies are preserved and that future generations are reminded of the sacrifices and achievements of those who fought against apartheid and other injustices.

This preservation of our history serves as a powerful symbol of South Africa's commitment to acknowledging its oppressive history and valuing the diverse voices and leaders that shaped it.

It also reinforces the idea that the past should not be forgotten, but rather be integrated into the nation's identity as a source of inspiration and a reminder of the importance of justice, equality, unity and social cohesion.
