PSC investigating Joemat-Pettersson's DD-G appointment

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has confirmed that it is currently investigating Tina Joemat-Pettersson's appointment of Greta Apelgren-Narkedien as the fisheries deputy director-general. 

This follows a request by the DA for an investigation.

According to the PSC the findings of the investigation will be made available by the 16th of August 2013. 

Earlier this year, Apelgren-Narkedien admitted during an interview on the television programme Carte Blanche, that no formal procedures were followed when she was appointed.

Even though she has since vacated the position, the procedures around her appointment still require investigation.

A recent parliamentary reply from Public Service and Administration Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, reveals the regulations approved in October 2012 guiding the appointment of senior management in government departments. 

Amongst other procedures, these regulations require that a Selection Committee be convened to shortlist and interview prospective candidates.

Based on the reply and Apelgren-Narkedien's admission, it would appear that Minister Joemat-Pettersson did not follow any of the prescribed regulations.

The DA looks forward to the outcome of the report and trusts that it will recommend stringent punitive measures against the Minister. 

The people of South Africa deserve the best possible and qualified candidates for top positions in order to ensure optimum service delivery.
