ANC regains support and wins two by-elections
The ANC Western Cape thanked its supporters and volunteers as it celebrated two more victories at the polls through by-elections yesterday in Saldhana Bay and Phillipi. The ANC was the winner in yesterday's three Western Cape by-elections.
Supporters came out to claim back Ward 9 (Vredenburg) in Saldhana Bay Municipality with a landslide victory of 1 969 votes to the DA's 370 and Ward 35 in the Metro. Ward 9 was previously won by an Independent in the Local Government Elections of 2011; whilst Ward 35 (Phillipi and New Crossroads) was retained by the ANC. The ANC managed to keep Phillippi but also reclaimed Saldhana Bay by significantly increasing its support to 88% of the vote.
The ANC's winning trend continues to confirm that support for the ANC in the province is on the rise. The party is able to consolidate its base areas in the Cape Metro while winning back lost ground and in particular in rural areas.
The victory in Vredenburg (Saldhana Bay) follows on one in January where the ANC won the DA ward in Vredendal. That ward had never been won by the ANC in the last decade and substantial growth in support occurred. In the by-election in January the tables was turn and the ANC increased its support, nearly 3 years on from the Local Government Elections.
ANC Western Cape leader Marius Fransman said: "These results confirm a trend that people are coming back to the ANC as their trust the ANC grow. We will continue our work and are looking forward to the 7 May general election."
