DA holds two seats, IFP wins one, in by-elections - IEC

John Patrick Hayes won 45.74% of the votes in Ward 05 Cederberg Municipality

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained two seats and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) won one seat. 

The new councillors for the DA are:

• Miquette Temlet in Ward 05, in City of Cape Town Municipality – CPT: The party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections by 92.26% of the votes cast, compared to 87.69% during the 2021 Municipal Elections.  Voter turnout yesterday was 24.59%

• John Patrick Hayes in Ward 05, in Cederberg Municipality – WC012: The party retained the seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, by 45.74% of the votes cast compared to 42.48% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 71.26%.

The new councillor for the IFP is:

• Khanyisile Mbotho in Ward 11 uMuziwabantu Municipality – KZN214: The party won the seat previously held by the Al Jama-Ah with 52.90% of the total vote cast compared to 51.76% received by Al Jama-Ah in the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56.43%.
