Party says it will closely monitor investigation

The DA welcomes formal inquiry into the M1 bridge collapse

The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the announcement made by the Department of Labour today to launch a formal inquiry into the M1 bridge collapse.

The inquiry will determine what exactly caused the collapse which killed two people and injured nineteen, and can bring a sense of closure to the families and loved ones of those killed and injured.

The DA is also pleased to know that Murray & Roberts, the company responsible for the construction of the bridge, has suspended all work on the project for now. Should Murray & Roberts be at fault it must be held liable for any criminal or civil claims for the loss of lives and injuries in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The DA will continue to monitor this inquiry- and all the other investigations- very closely to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable and due restitution is given to the families of those who died and were injured.
