DA wins Ward 7 by-election in Oudtshoorn - DA WCape

Liza Albrecht says this means the party has maintained its 13 seat majority in coalition with COPE

DA wins outright majority in Oudtshoorn

Thursday 7 May 2015

The DA is delighted with the outcome of yesterday's by-election in Ward 7, Oudtshoorn.

The DA won the election with 79.3 % of the vote against the ANC's 13.4 % and the independent candidate's 2.6 %.

After the by-election we have maintained our majority in coalition with COPE with 13 seats, against the ANC-NPP-Icosa coalition’s 12 seats.

For over a year and a half the ANC has frustrated the DA's efforts to convene a Council meeting in order for the DA led majority to take over government, despite a court order instructing them to do so.

The ANC’s failure to respect the will of the majority of the people of Oudtshoorn is a flagrant disregard for our democratic principles and our Constitution.

Because The ANC has repeatedly proven in the past they are not prepared to respect democracy and to relinquish power when they lose, the DA will, after yesterday's win meet with our lawyers about the best way forward.

Oudtshoorn's residents have suffered enough under the ANC's mismanagement and corruption.

It is time for the ANC to ship out so that the people of Oudtshoorn can get the government they deserve and voted for.
