ANC WEST RAND STATEMENT ON THE RAPID RESPONSE TO RESTORE NORMALITY IN MOHLAKENG
The ANC West Rand is pleased to the rapid response by ANC branches to the destruction caused in Mohlakeng by an EFF led march under the deceptive guise of service delivery protests on the 04th February 2015 by mobilising its members to restore some normality in the township.
Relative calm has been restored in the area with the launch of a comprehensive community campaign to SAY NO to violence and destruction in our residential areas.
Volunteers and members of ANC branches in Mohlakeng and the greater Randfontein have been mobilised and been working round the clock since the early hours of this morning to clean the area and restore normality. All of this is done with the support of the local community.
The ANC West Rand is pleased that calm in the area has been restored after the rampage and mayhem of the EFF led march, completely violating the constitutionally entrenched rights of our people. Working people in Mohlakeng have returned to work and learners are able to attend school.
The ANC West Rand condemns attacks and looting of shops of foreign nationals in the area.
We call on our communities to refrain from violence and isolate criminal elements in our society who are involved in these atrocious crimes against foreign traders. Such violence must be roundly condemned as hate crimes which resurrect the most infectious forms of bigotry.
The ANC West Rand calls particularly on our young people to desist from participating in acts of violence which impacts on payment of services such as payment of pension grants to the elderly; maternity services and the provision of chronic medication, libraries and schools. We appeal to all our people across the West Rand region to fight opportunistic crimes of hate and intolerance directed against anyone.
