The EFF statement on the Western Cape twitter account

09 February 2014

The EFF officially distances itself from the tweets of its Western Cape provincial twitter account (@EFFWCAPE) which tried to mock Nomboniso Gasa's account of rape. The twitter account was being operated by an EFF member on behalf of the province and the leadership has already taken steps to correct the occurrence.

Rape, in particular against women, remains a terror never to be used politically or otherwise. The EFF is will never condone usage of rape experiences of people to score political points. We condemn such and will forever protect rape victims, including protecting them against rape culture.

Rape culture, which finds deep expression in South Africa's broader cultures of sexual relations, is the predominate sexual imposition on women, which even expresses itself on the very mockery of so traumatic a violation of the human dignity. In essence, the irregular usage of the account is part of the reflection of this culture and the EFF condemns it and has instructed the province to take necessary steps against the individual.
