GAUTENG HOSPITALS NEED AUTONOMY NOT CENTRAL CONTROL
The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng rejects any national take-over of the four academic hospitals in Gauteng as part of the ANC's plan to place all ten academic hospitals under the national health department (see report).
While these hospitals have critical problems, the best solution is to give them maximum management autonomy with accountability remaining with the province.
Decentralisation is preferable to centralisation that increases red tape and bureaucratic control.
The national department can best assist with realistic budgets for the Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg, Steve Biko and George Mukhari hospitals, which all treat a large number of patients from outside Gauteng.
