Gauteng DA backs Tshwane Rooiwal upgrade - will not allow EFF stunts to thwart service delivery

24 May 2023

The DA in Gauteng wholeheartedly supports the critical commitments made by Tshwane Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink and his administration in the City’s Budget Speech today. The earmarked R450 million towards upgrading the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Plant over the next three years is a historic and much-needed allocation. This investment demonstrates the Multi-Party Coalition government's focus on addressing pressing infrastructural challenges and ensuring the supply of healthy water for our residents in Hammanskraal.

In the past, we've seen allocations as low as R10 million per year towards Rooiwal, which were starkly insufficient considering the water issues in Hammanskraal. It is clear that the Multi-Party Coalition government, led by Executive Mayor Brink of the DA, is determined to rectify the inadequate provisions of previous administrations and prioritise the health and welfare of our citizens.

It is disheartening for the DA and for all residents of Tshwane to witness parties such as the EFF using the real opportunity to address the needs of the residents of Hammanskraal and elsewhere as a platform for political stunts. However, the DA will not allow these disruptive tactics to overshadow our core purpose: serving the people of Gauteng. Making good on the promise and values of our party, Executive Mayor Brink is committed to transparent communication of the budget details and will ensure that residents and media have access to this information through the City's communication channels.

Today's announcement, despite the callous efforts of the EFF to disrupt the upgrading of Tshwane's infrastructure, is a testament to the Multi-Party Coalition government's resolve to foster a healthier, safer, and more prosperous Tshwane. The DA will continue playing our part in this mission. I look forward to witnessing the positive changes that this crucial infrastructure upgrade will bring to our communities.
