This afternoon I met with the Provincial Commissioner of Police, Arno Lamoer and Mr Richard Bosman, the City's Executive Director of Community Safety, who informed me of their plans to maintain law and order and protect commuters on Monday 27 August when the ANCYL has threatened to continue its "ungovernability campaign" in the City.

The ANCYL has threatened to disrupt public transport to ensure that people "stop being slaves in this economy."

Provincial Minister of Transport Robin Carlisle, has given and assurance that public transport will function as normal. The Police have assured me that commuters will be protected.

The Police briefed me on the march that has been approved to take place on Monday between Keizersgracht and the Provincial Legislature from 10h00 till 13h30. All marchers must then disperse.

General Lamoer and Mr Bosman assured me that the plans of the Police and Metro Police are in place and that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent intimidation and disruption of public transport. Anyone breaking the law will be summarily arrested and charged. The march organisers will be held financially and personally liable for any damage to property.

I have undertaken to receive the ANCYL's memorandum personally ON CONDITION THAT THEY WITHDRAW THEIR THREATS TO MAKE THE CITY UNGOVERNABLE AND APOLOGISE TO THE PEOPLE OF CAPE TOWN FOR THE LOSS OF LIFE AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY CASUSED DURING THEIR PREVIOUS "UNGOVERNABILITY CAMPAIGN".

The police's investigation into the people who co-ordinated this campaign is ongoing.
