KZN and WCape: Results of municipal by-elections – IEC

IFP takes a seat from the ANC while the DA retains seat won in 2021

Results of the Municipal By-elections held on 15 February 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape provinces, the Team Sugar South Africa (TSSA), Cederberg First Residents Association (CFRA) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), retained their seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) won a seat previously won by the ANC.

The new TSSA councillor is

- Sindisiwe Brenda Mashazi, in ward 31, Newcastle Municipality – KZN252, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 50,42% of the total votes cast compared to 31.12% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 43,24%

The new IFP councillor is

- Ntokozo Sikhumbuzo Mtimkulu, in ward 04, Mtubatuba Municipality – KZN275, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won the seat previously won by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 53,86% of the total votes cast compared to 41,90% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 30,13%.

The new CFRA councillor is:

- Andre Grant Mouton, in ward 06, Cederberg Municipality – WC012, Western Cape. The party retained its seat won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 47,43% of the total votes cast compared to 44,31% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 46,68%.

The new DA councillor is:

- Andries Stephanus Eksteen, in ward 05,  Cape Agulhas Municipality - WC033. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 42,00% of the total votes cast compared to 58,17% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 64,80%.
