Gauteng health apologises for stink at Boksburg hospital

Leaking pipes fixed at Tambo Memorial Hospital

4 Jan 2011

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development wishes to apologise to patients, their families and the community for the foul smell experienced at Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.

The smell was caused by water leakages in the pipes.

A team of Health, Safety and Environmental health officials conducted an assessment last Thursday and concluded that the foul smell was a result of stagnant water in the service shafts. They recommended that the Department of Infrastructure Development to urgently address the problem, that the affected areas be treated, windows be left open for ventilation that the public be informed about the problem and stagnant water be swept away. The hospital immediately implemented the recommendations.

A team from the Department of Infrastructure Development was at the hospital today to do an assessment on the leakages. They immediately started replacing the gasket that was causing the leaks. Nuts and bolts were tightened and repairs to the ceiling were started.

The department would like to point out that this did not in any way affect service delivery at the hospital.
